NEW MOTOR AND CONTROL BOARD - FULLY WORKING. The PRINCE is a dedicated crankshaft regrinding machine specially designed for use in vehicle engine re-manufacturing workshops. Its defining feature is that it can regrind both the main and con rod crankshaft journals on a single setting.
Before grinding can begin, the fillet radii on the crankshaft are measured and the appropriate radius cut onto the edges of the grinding wheel using the special radius attachment. The grinding wheel is then dressed prior to machining. The crankshaft is mounted in the machine with the front of the crankshaft secured in an adjustable three jaw chuck. The rear of the crankshaft is supported at the flywheel end using a fixed centre held in the tailstock and located in the spigot bearing aperture.
A dial indicator gauge mounted on the machine base is used to show any run out at the nose end and by adjusting the special three jaw chuck the crankshaft is set to run perfectly concentrically. Run out at the flywheel end is then checked before grinding begins. Main bearing journals are reground in the conventional manor with the wheel fed in by a rigid control wheel.
Each journal is ground in turn, generally working from the rear to the front of the crankshaft. The con rod journals are then re-ground without the need for re-setting the crankshaft as would be the case with conventional crank grinding machines which employ offset chucks to realign the con rod journals to run in line with the machine axis. This is achieved with a unique wheel head design which allows the grinding wheel to follow the path of the con rod journal as the crankshaft rotates. Two fingers which are arranges at 90 degrees to each other and which are mounted on the wheel head locate over the journal being machined and act as a V block to keep the grinding wheel in contact with the journal while the grinding operation takes place.A micro-feed control wheel also mounted on the grinding wheel head controls the finger movement and in turn the cutting action as the grinding wheel moves closer to the work piece. With this method, the techniques found in centreless grinding are replicated producing high precision results with the minimum of stock removal. See our other items listed.
